How to Tie a Half Knot Hemp & Macrame Essential
A half knot is half of a square knot. You can tie a half knot from the left or from the right. Tying left/right or right/left knots in succession will give you a square knot. These knots are tied around one or more 'filler' cords. From the right: Slide the righthand working strand under the filler cord and cross it over the lefthand working cord.
Release the first cord. Now, take the end of the lefthand working cord and pass it over the filler cord and under the righthand working cord (enter the loop from top to bottom). Tighten the knot. Alternate Method: Pass the right strand over the filler knot and behind the left strand, with the left cord then passing behind the filler and up through the loop between the right/filler. You get the same result; it's a matter of personal preference.
The knot work the same from the other side. Pass the lefthand cord under the filler and over the righthand cord. Release the cord.
Pass the righthand cord over the filler and under the lefthand cord. While alternating right/left knots will give you a square knot, tying all right or all left knots will produce a nice spiral.
