~ Anne Helmenstine, Ph.D.

People come in different sizes, which is why many necklaces, bracelets, and anklets come with extension chains. Jewelry store jewelry, however, tends to be made in standard lengths. If you make your own jewelry you can customize your pieces to fit the wearer. If you've been wondering what sizes a jewelry store carries, here's a list of the most common lengths for commercial or production line jewelry.

Necklaces

  • Collar - fits snugly around the neck (14 inches, 29-30 centimeters)
  • Choker - fits around the base of the wearer's neck (16", 40 cm)
  • Princess - usually for a pendant meant to rest in the hollow of the throat (18-20", 45-50 cm)
  • Matinee - designed to dip toward decolletee (23-27", 58-69 cm)
  • Opera - long rope necklace, often with 2 clasps (35-37", 89-94 cm)

Bracelets

7" or 18 cm (women)
9" or 23 cm (men)

Anklets

10" or 25 cm
Anklets usually include an extension chain as ankles vary widely in size.
