How to Tie a Square Knot
The square knot is one of the most basic knots used to make hemp jewelry. The knot is very secure and resists coming undone, so it is useful for more than just macrame. A series (sinnet) of these knots will remain flat and even.
A square knot consists of two
half knots, alternating left and right or right first and then left. Unless a pattern specifies which knot to tie first, the choice is up to you. I prefer to tie my half knots (and square knots) by passing the working cord under the filler cord. See my tutorial on half knots if you would rather pass the working cord
over the filler cords. It makes no difference in the end.
I started my square knot from the right. This example uses a pair of knotting cords and four filler cords.
Pass the right knotting cord under the filler cords and lay it across the left knotting cord.
Now cross the left knotting cord over the filler cords and through the loop made between the right knotting cord and the filler cord(s). Tighten the knot. This completes a right half knot, or half of the square knot.
For the left half-knot, I show the knot in a single step. I passed the left knotting cord under the filler cords and laid it across the right knotting cord, then crossed the right knotting cord over the filler cords and through the loop made between the left knotting cord and the filler cords. This completes the left half knot. Pull it tight and that's it!
