Aurora Borealis - AB - Definition

Return to Main Glossary

Definition This term, or the abbreviation 'AB', is used to indicate that a stone has had an iridescent finish applied to it. The rainbow effect results from depositing a very thin layer of metal atoms onto the surface of the stone. The process was invented by the Swarovski company together with Christian Dior in 1955. The name derives from the Northern Lights or aurora borealis.
