Definition A small magnifying glass, often set in an eyepiece. For jewelry and gemology, a loupe is used to detect internal flaws and surface blemishes and to assess the color and cut of a stone. The US Federal Trade Commission has specified that a 10X (magnification of 10 times) loupe must be used for standardized gemstone grading performed in the US.
