Patina - Definition

Return to Main Glossary

Definition A fine oxide coating on a metal's surface. The term is frequently applied to verdigris, the greenish layer covering ancient bronzes, copper, and brass. Exposure to air naturally oxidizes many metals, turning copper and bronze green, iron red, silver black, and gold reddish. Although patina is a natural consquence of age, it may be applied to newer objects by using acids or electrolyte solutions.
