Pickle is a hot, weak acid solution which is used to remove discoloration and residue on wire or other metal that has resulted from oxidation (e.g., rust, patina, tarnish), flux, or oils. The term refers to both the solution and its use. For example, you pickle wire to remove residual flux. This is also called 'pickling'. A container of pickle is also called a pickle pot. Weak sulfuric acid or weak hydrochloric acid are commonly used for pickling. Pickling is performed to clean a metal for aesthetic purposes or to prepare it for further processing. The metal is generally rinsed in water or a mildly basic solution after it has been pickled in order to prevent corrosion.
