Life Story In addition to writing and managing Jewelry Making, I am the Guide and Editor for the
About Chemistry website and Correspondent for the All Info About
Chemistry and
Alternative & Complementary Medicine websites. I've been a scientist and a college professor and was accepted to medical school. However, I wanted to be able to raise my kids myself, so I found a way to support myself from home. I love what I do and I've grown very accustomed to setting my own schedule and priorities, so I doubt I'll ever have a 'normal' job again.
Interests I love to make jewelry! I go through phases where I'll weave beads for a couple of weeks, then switch to working wire, then move on to peyote, then move on to something else, and eventually return to an earlier obsession. I've been incorporating multiple skills into more and more of my designs, but I think I'll always cycle through my techniques.
My husband got me hooked on anime, so we watch the latest fan subs from Japan just about every evening. I figure I'll be able to understand conversational Japanese in another couple of years. Maybe someday I will learn to speak it, but I don't think I'll ever learn to read it beyond jewelry-related terms.
What else? I'm an avid reader of fiction. I love music and play all types of flutes/recorders and several other instruments. I like movies that offer lots of gratuitous violence or are scary or which prominently feature aliens. I'm a big softie where animals are concerned and every wild and tame creature in the area stops by my house for a snack. I've kept freshwater and saltwater aquaria and bred zebra and Lady Gouldian finches. Right now, I claim one cat (no, the other six on the porch aren't actually mine!). I live near the ocean and go to the beach at every opportunity. Someday I'll learn to windsurf, but for now I'm sticking with bodysurfing.
Education
I have bachelor of arts degrees in physics and math from Hastings College in Nebraska and a doctorate of philosophy in biomedical sciences from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. I have no formal training in making jewelry or website design. I'm self-taught; everything I know about the jobs I do I learned from reading books or surfing the Internet.
