Book Review - Beading with Brick Stitch

Beading with Brick Stitch
by Diane Fitzgerald (Author)
Paperback: 128 pages
Publisher: Interweave Press; (April 2001)
ISBN: 1883010721

This Beadwork How-To Book focuses on brick stitch, with history, instructions for the technique, projects, and a gallery of finished work. The step-by-step instructions are simple enough for the absolute beginner, while the projects and gallery will please the intermediate and advanced beader. Something for everyone who loves brick stitch!

This is one of my favorite beading books. It has a very narrow focus - brick stitch - with just about everything you could want to know about the technique. Diane Fitzgerald starts out with a bit of the stitch's history and then discusses the tools and materials needed to do this type of beadwork (types of beads and thread, with notes about tension). Next, step-by-step instructions for the stitch are given. The written directions are clear, as are the diagrams. You'll learn about flat and circular brick stitch, several methods of increasing and decreasing, and multiple finishing techniques. The next section contains the projects. Diane recruited 'bead fairies' to test out the projects, so you get to see several renditions of each project. The final section is a gallery of inspirational beadwork. If you work through the book, I daresay you will have a good idea of how to make anything pictured in the book and will be able to create your own unique designs. This is a book of possibilities, with lots of ideas provided for altering and adapting basic techniques. Highly recommended!
