I have a love/hate relationship with coraling. I
love all of the jewelry I've ever made using this technique, but I hate the tangled thread mess I inevitably get at least once during the creation of a complex piece. Varvara's first book is devoted entirely to coraling, so if you don't enjoy the technique/the results, then this isn't the book for you. On the other hand, if you crave branched fringe, this book will keep you beading for many, many hours. The finished jewelry is truly stunning.
This is a book of 10 necklace designs. It's a fairly thin paperback, at 44 pages, but packed full of detailed diagrams, with color plates showing the finished designs. The written instructions and black/white diagrams are very clear and easy to follow. I have found a few instances where the bead count differs between the diagrams/pictures/descriptions, so be aware of that. Also, I'm convinced that Varvara beads at the speed of light, because it usually takes me twice as long as her estimates to complete a piece (or else I'm just really slow). Otherwise, everything is very straightforward. Varvara uses vertical netting to support many of the pieces; instructions for this stitch are presented as well.
I target this book for the beginner, but not absolute novice, through the intermediate beader. I think a novice might have trouble maintaining thread tension, which is vital for coraling. It's a tightly focused beading book; possibly the only one written exclusively for this technique. Highly recommended!
