~ Anne Helmenstine, Ph.D.
Beading with Right Angle Weave by Christine Prussing Paperback: 126 pages Interweave Press (October 28, 2004) ISBN: 1931499500
Right angle weave is an incredibly versatile beading technique. The same stitch that can be used to make perfect geometrical forms is also used to make freeform sculptural shapes, and everything in between. Chris Prussing's book explains the basic stitch, increasing/decreasing, and making chains and various shapes. The skills are applied to jewelry and sculptural projects, followed by an inspirational gallery of finished work. |

I've always been a huge fan of Chris Prussing's beadwork and projects, yet I didn't add this book to my beading library when it was first released because right angle weave (raw) is such an easy and forgiving stitch I didn't think there would be much an instructional book would offer an experienced beader. I should have gotten Beading with Right Angle Weave sooner - it didn't disappoint.
The book opens with a little bit about the history of right angle weave, followed by information about the beads and other materials used for the stitich. The next chapter is devoted to the basics of doing right angle weave. Everything you need to know is covered, no matter how new to beading you are, for both single-needle and double-needle right angle weave. Next, you'll learn how to make increases, decreases, and turns in your beadwork. There is an entire chapter on different types beaded right angle weave chains. There are projects to help practice all of these skills. From this point, the focus switches to making a sort of fabric with right angle weave. The beaded fabric can be used to make an irregular shape or to make triangles, torus-shaped beaded beads, boxes out of beads, tablets, frame-shapes, and triangles. These projects include finished jewelry pieces, components, scuptural items, and beaded containers. The final section of the book showcases right angle weave creations from various artists. A list of references and suppliers for materials concludes the book.
The step-by-step instructions include detailed materials lists, clearly numbered steps, color diagrams of techniques, and color photographs of the finished projects. Chris Prussing's book is the only one I know of devoted to right angle weave. If you're looking for a beading stitch that can be used for pretty much every type of bead or project, this is the stitch for you. The instructions cover everything an absolute beginner needs to know, while offering artful projects and a gallery of finished work that will keep you inspired and creative long after you master the technique.
