Book Review - Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains

Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains
by Jean Reist Stark and Josephine Reist Smith
Paperback: 190 pages
Publisher: Brynmorgen Press; (December 15, 1999)
ISBN: 0961598484

Jean Reist Stark and Josephine Reist Smith present step-by-step instructions for making 38 loop-in-loop chain styles. In addition, there is a section on making closures to complement the chains. The hardbound book has an inner spiral core that will lay flat for easy reference. The chains will work best for fine silver or gold, although sterling sterling and copper will work for many styles.

This is an exceptional resource for persons interested in the ancient art of chainmaking! The first section of the book discusses some of the history of loop-in-loop chains. General information on metals, wire gauges, fusing, soldering, tools, and shaping links are provided. Subsequent chapters introduce different types of chains. You'll find variations on single loop-in-loop chains, pinched loop chains, double loop-in-loop chains, multidirectional chains, multiple soldered chains, multiple woven chains, and clasps. Many of the chains require soldered or fused links. The instructions will be easiest to apply to fine silver, although other metals may be used as well. The appendix and glossary help with terminology, selecting dowels for chains, alloying gold, and soldering. The diagrams are clear, black/white line drawings. The text is sequential and easy to follow. The information (difficult to find elsewhere) is very clearly presented. I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to make their own chains or looking to expand beyond basic chain maille techniques.
